Ben Drew aka Plan B was in Sydney recently for his Parklife appearance, and while here, he had an Australian screening of his directorial debut, ill Manors. ill Manors is a focus on the people who live in East London, with drugs, prostitution and killing being a major part of their lives, affecting the majority of youth. The youth who live in these areas are named CHAV’s – Council Housed And Violent and are subjected to a life of crime from a young age; Ill Manors shows a number of intertwining stories of youth living this life.

Outside of making music, acting and directing Ben runs a Youth orientated charity – ‘Each One Teach One.’ This charity helps disadvantaged youth get off the street, and helps them utilize skills they have, by putting it into a trade and to good use. Street Uni is an youth oriented organization ran by the Ted Noffs Foundation, it aims to help disadvantage youth use their negative emotions and feed it into creativity, whether it be Music, Dance, Art and Film. Street Uni holds the same passion as Ben, a passion for helping others; 9 students from Street Uni and one youth worker was invited to attend the screening of ill Manors, they were invited to not only experience the film, but to be inspired, and shown that you can achieve anything.

Below are emails from Youth Worker Charles, and his response to attending the screening.

The Street University staff and young people would like to thank you for inviting us to be a part of the ILL MANNERS exclusive screening. Our young people really enjoyed the film and even more the lessons delivered in it. We selected young people who are not only at risk and from disadvantaged backgrounds but also who we believed displayed an interest social issues. During our ride home in the bus the feedback from the young people was that they were inspired by how real and down to earth PLAN B was. The fact that he is a gifted MC, well-spoken and presents himself well really encouraged our young people to see the importance of knowing who you are, accepting your strengths and weakness and never giving up regardless of the circumstances they find themselves in. We also talked about how the film brought out the point that we as individuals and adults especially cannot keep blaming the youth for the lifestyles they are living because the cycle was exposed to them by the generation before them. Very inspiring. Thank you for being so generous and looking after us and our young people that night. We hope we can do more in future together.

    Respect & Peace,

Just yesterday one of our young people that attended the screening and who has been battling depression for quite some time now, came in and with a huge smile said that night was the one of the best nights she has had. What a great outcome and such a joy to see her beaming. Gathering from the feedback, One of the highlights for our service was hearing the young people conversing about the importance of using their craft to convey the true stories occurring in their own neighbourhoods instead of superficial material. What a huge break through because we aim to raise these young MC’s levels of consciousness and most times we find ourselves planting seeds in the hope that it will eventually blossom, but a film like ILL MANNERS is up in your face and instantly makes you think. We can’t thank you guys enough.

The great news as follows with the ones we brought out that night: - 5 are currently in training with us to become youth workshop developers and facilitators - 1 is doing his HSC for the second time but this time round has decided to take time off from the mic to study for the exams. - 1 is also still in school but has become more conscious about his surroundings especially as an MC and has become aware of the power an artist possesses in that it can construct or destruct. - 1 has been motivated to return to continue his studies in filming. Great results!!! The conversations surrounding that evening are still mentioned regularly by those that attended. Just yesterday during a discussion about Live Performance two of the youths mentioned how PLAN B hated being centre attention and gigging live but because of his goals, he does what needs to be done. I am looking to purchase the film online so that we can screen it our centre for Movie Nights.

    Regards,
    Charles Lomu
