Restoring Haring Is Caring

There is a street corner in Collingwood that for me is a nexus of art and music. A busy rundown corner that was the home to a beautiful shithole of a pub and the crumbling ruins of one of a mural by one the worlds most celebrated street artists… Ok enough already, I’m talking about The Tote and one of only 30 surviving large scale Keith Haring murals left on the planet…

Thankfully The mural has just undergone a full restoration led by renowned Italian conservator Antonio Rava and The Tote is still undergoing its de-conservation led by hordes of denim clad rock dogs and buckets of Carlton Draft. Thank fuck, order is restored…

So, walking past this enormous gyrating/pulsating/wiggling/partying (as all of Harings works seem to do) mural and the dilapidated haunted house of a pub (The Tote) and I got to thinking. This mural and pub stand side by side, so close that you would swear that the figures in Haring’s piece are dancing to the sounds pumping out of The Tote. Just as album artwork plays alongside the music in a fluid partnership of sound and visuals indelibly etched your mind every time you drop the needle, press play or double click.

    Or is it just me….

Some favourites of mine are as follows, click on the image for the audio component.

Duck Rock – Malcolm McLaren 1983 Artwork – Keith Haring

Keith Haring and Malcolm McLaren present what is essentially an audio visual collage of early 80’s ‘street culture’

Monk - (Thelonious Monk with Sonny Rollins and Frank Foster) 1954 Artwork – Andy Warhol

     Warhol beyond the banana.

    Rammellzee vs. K-Rob – Beat Bop Producer - Jean-Michel Basquiat Artwork - Jean-Michel Basquiat

A true clash of New York styles. This record was originally meant to be a battle record to solve beef between Rammellzee and Basquiat.

Brian Eno – Taking Tiger Island (By Strategy) Artwork - Peter Schmidt

Peter and Brian would go on to create the Oblique Strategies cards.

Captain Beefheart and The Magic Band – Shiny Beast Artwork - Don Van Vliet

One of Don Van Vliet’s (Captain Beefheart) coolest self-painted covers.
