Kanye West and Taylor Swift recently had lunch together sparking the rumor the pair are thinking of collaborating. Just visualizing these two recording a song makes me cringe. Individually, what they release is damn catchy and I admit to having some of their most popular tunes on my playlist (Blank Space gets a regular spin, as does Paranoid). But trying to imagine what they could potentially release together only serves to highlight how incompatible they are.
I can’t help comparing it to some bad food combos like, pepperoni and peanut butter sandwiches or beef and chocolate fondue or whatever weird shit people eat. Someone convinces you it’s a good idea, and then when you finally try it, all you’re filled with is nausea and regret.
Seriously, think about it, what palatable combination could country and hip-hop actually produce? I’ll remind you , none ! Or did you forget about this and this. These assaults to the auditory and visual senses are examples of what could come out of this unnecessary union. Honestly, Taylor really doesn’t need a repeat of Thug Story, her attempt at gaining some street cred? – “I’m so gangster you can find me baking cookies at night” - or is she just taking the piss, hard to tell?
Plus, this whole thing stinks of fakery, making me question Kanye’s motives. If this act was an effort in showing public solidarity towards Taylor, then the simple gesture of a lunch was enough to demonstrate that. There is no need for a collaboration to further prove it’s copacetic between them. Let’s not spoil it whilst you’re ahead aye Kanye?
If however, they actually do produce something good, then I will literally print this article out and eat it, and write something nice about their effort….maybe. Anyway, in anticipation of the Taylor/Kanye venture, let us relive some of the weirdest and possibly most awful collaborations in music history to date.
