UPDATE:
Taylor Swift has cancelled her Melbourne Cup appearance this November after tons of pressure from animal activists as well as fans who did not want to see their queen affiliated with the cruel horse race.
Taylor's Australian promoters Mushroom Events said, "Changes to her Asian promo schedule have made it logistically impossible for her to be here. To all of Taylor’s fans, we hope to see Taylor in Australia in 2020."

In surprising news this morning, Taylor Swift has been announced to headline the Melbourne Cup race this November 5th, following the super-successful release of her new album, Lover.
Which would be awesome and all well and good except... a lot of people have thoughts about the Melbourne Cup and the horse-racing industry's abuse of horses, meaning Taylor Swift is inadvertently supporting that too despite being a huge animal lover.
A bunch of people online on both sides of the spectrum are questioning the booking too. Tons are commending the Melbourne Cup for locking in one of the world's biggest stars in arguably the peak of her career, while others aren't so hot on the animal abuse thing and seeing Taylor affiliated with it. Others have mixed feelings about wanting to see her but not wanting to support the race.
Regardless of whether you're for or against the Melbourne Cup and horse-racing, it'll be Tay's only appearance this year in Australia and she'll be performing two songs from Lover. She says she's really keen to come, too.
“I can’t wait to come to Melbourne, and I can’t wait to come to the Melbourne Cup."
As a stan I usually blindly support everything taylor swift does but I just can’t get behind her singing at the Melbourne Cup. It’s passive support of a terrible corrupt industry and I just hope she’s uninformed. https://t.co/7CZP9jZp1C

@taylorswift13 #nuptothecup please don’t support the Melbourne Cup.
It’s animal exploitation!— Briannagh O'Loughlin (@briannaghol) September 11, 2019
@taylorswift13 Please don’t perform the Melbourne Cup! don’t make me choose between my love for you and my disdain for socially acceptable (nay celebrated) Animal cruelty. It’s the race the ‘stops the nation’ for all the wrong reasons. #heartbroken @GiGiHadid saw this in 2014

Put in my annual leave request for Melbourne Cup week a few hours before the Taylor Swift announcement and I have never been more relieved by the promise of not working in my life.

I dont think this was a good choice coming to Australia for Melbourne Cup.— Scott Cameron (@ScottIsFamous) September 11, 2019
taylor swift performing the Melbourne cup really links together her two main brands of weird horse girl and insane capitalist Yas kween

call me out on my bad temper about this if you must but if you’re going to the melbourne cup just to see taylor swift when you say that you care about animal rights... you should be ashamed of yourself. might be harsh but i’m not the one throwing my morals aside in 0.2 seconds

Low key annoyed @taylorswift13 is performing at the Melbourne cup cause
