The Heart Beats

The feisty GIF chick above is Linda Sanders, the adorable drummer and lead singer of an obscure 60’s all-girl garage group called The Heart Beats.

Their claim to fame was winning a battle of the bands type TV special called “Happening ‘68” where they performed a version of “Time Won’t Let Me,” a great song originally by The Outsiders. Thank god a video of their winning performance survived and got posted onto YouTube.

The ‘Beats are just bursting with enthusiasm and brought out all the stops with some charmingly clunky amateur choreography. Their prizes for winning included a VW bus which they were too young to drive and a 10,000(!) dollar recording contract, which Linda’s mother made them turn down in order to finish high school(!!!). They only cut a handful of singles, the best one being a rendition of Mouse and the Traps’ “Cryin’ Inside.” In the grand scheme of things, The Heart Beats’ triumphant win was a small victory, a very very minor footnote. But still, not bad for a couple of nice 17 year old girls out of Lubbock, Texas who also happened to be one of the first all-female garage groups.
