The James Brown Of Rap Is Back!

  • The James Brown Of Rap Is Back!
    POSTED

My Buddy recently sent me a link to this new Mystikal track that has leaked

It reminded me that hes got that JB thing down pretty sweetly. By way of commentary he attached this from Blockhead’s blog ‘Holy Shit! New Mystikal song! Remember how people used to say he’s the James Brown of rap? No? Well, they did. Anyway, this is the song where he takes that idea and runs with it as far as possible. Still, the best rapping rapist alive by a landslide.’

Which served to remind me of why (a) we haven’t heard much from Mystikal for a while (read it up on wikithingy) and (b) why there are reasons to take a strong dislike to US hip hop – namely its utter immorality.

But it did make me go and listen to James Brown’s Funky Drummer which is maybe the most famous break of all time (or maybe the second most famous thanks to the Winstons Amen Brother going on every drum n’ bass and dubstep track).

Wow what a band! Bootsy and Phelps Collins plus Fred and the Horny Horns. This is the best the JB’s ever sounded and that’s going some. Pure heavy heavy super FONK! The Bomb!!

Which then in turn reminded me of the greatest “soul hop” album of all time – a Public Enemy offshoot by the rather mystical (see what I did there?) Son of Bazerk

Which about 1 million years ago fused the hottest production crew around – the Bomb Squad – and a JB style soul revue to make some hip hop hotness. And then they were gone…

So I was surprised when I googled them to find that they’d reformed in 2010 and this year put out a new joint called “On The Verge of an Ass Whippin’” on Chuck D’s slamjamz label. If you go there you can download it for free.

I’m off there now. You should too if you dig the below which is just Christmas party hip hop at its best.
