The Retail Experience: Third Man Records Nashville, TN

    POSTED

On a recent adventure to Nashville, Tennessee, Jack White’s recording studio and record store was #1 on our visit-list.

Driving there through a slightly industrial area of town on a scorching Nashville day, you would not expect the colourful fantasy land that lies behind the discreet warehouse entrance.  If you can call a bright yellow garage door and Lightning Bolt logo discreet.

Enter, Third Man Records: a colorful haven of toys and games. And Lego. And records. Oh yeah and a recording studio, the company’s offices, a warehouse, a photo studio, and a live performance venue.  It’s over-stimulation like no other. In the Novelties Lounge beside the Record Store you can pay a quarter to play ‘guess the band’, performed by puppet monkeys in a glass case, take happy snaps in the photo booth, or a few more dollars to sing Happy Birthday to a friend inside a telephone-booth-recording-studio and have it spit back out to you on a tiny vinyl to take away.

I was able to sneak a peak of the warehouse out back as several factory workers *cough: Oompa Loompas*, immaculately satisfying the compulsory black & yellow dress code, pulled the garage door open to reveal an old motel inspired space housing the yellow (blunder) Bus that is the Third Man Rolling Record Store.

If it sounds more like a mini circus than a record store, you’re having pretty much the right visual!  I felt a little like a child as I marveled over the Lego creation of Jack and Meg, the puppets and dolls and games, and of course the immaculate styling and coordination of the whole place.  It feels like you’re physically walking through someone’s lifelong dream, which I’m sure is exactly what a whole lot of money was thrown into it to achieve, and it successfully confounded me as I have never experienced anything quite like it.

On a side note more about the city itself, I can highly recommend taking yourself vintage shopping (read: The Hip Zipper), where all your Mary-Jane dress and denim desires will be satisfied, and attending $10 pint and pie night with a side of live music each night at The Family Wash.
