twenty one pilots recently made a triumphant return to the live stage at Summerfest 2021, and to celebrate they covered one of our favourite My Chemical Romance tracks.
During their 20-song set, which saw the band showcasing tracks from their recent album Scaled And Icy, they played a snippet of MCR's I’m Not Okay (I Promise), the lead single from MCR's second album, Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge.
The gig was a momentous one for the band, as it was the first time they got to introduce fans to their backing band. There were a series of covers sprinkled into the Summerfest set, with songs by Johnny Nash, Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros and The Temptations also featuring.
It's not the first time that twenty one pilots have shown love for MCR, as they recorded a cover of The Black Parade track Cancer back in 2016. They've also spoken about the band in interviews, and in a chat with Kerrang! about the parallels between the two bands, twenty one pilots remarked, “That’s a pretty crazy comparison.
"We’ve never met those guys, but I look up to them, and I think that I’ve been influenced by them. I don’t think there’s a band in our peer group that wouldn’t be able to say that, so it’s a huge compliment.”
