Meet No Comply. Two brothers; one rapper, one producer and one new, catchy AF single.
Auckland-based duo - Fynn and Ethan Blackwood – have caught our attention with their debut release Tic Tac Toe. Think punchy basslines, unapologetic raps and a unique, high energy flow.
On the release, the brothers explained that Tic Tac Toe is a metaphor for the day to day wins and losses of internal struggles, friendships and life in general.
The wins and losses of life you say lads? Tell me one person on the planet who can’t relate to that. We can wait.
While the brother’s take their music seriously, it sure doesn’t seem like they see themselves in the same vein. The fruity new lofi video for Tic Tac Toe is like being a fly on the wall at an outrageous NZ backyard tea party.
It’s everything you’re expecting and more. Directed by Harry Kidman, the visual sees the lads punch beers, shove durries up their orifices, rock mullets, and flex some classic speed dealer sunnies. There is someone’s uncle (maybe?) in the bush with a handy cam, a friendly family tussle, lawnmower antics… And quality dental hygiene.
A wild ride from start to finish, but all in all, a light, playful watch to take your mind off the heavy COVID-19 world we’re currently living in.
Why not?
Disclaimer: If you want to throw your own NZ backyard party make sure you’re keeping the invites to the people you live with.
So, who are Fynn and Ethan Blackwood?
Fynn takes the rapping and songwriter reins, with his focus on the feeling his music can give people over almost everything else. But it’s his wordplay, wit and storytelling that have been major factors in the 25-year-old’s come up. Having previously released music under the pseudonym Dendei The Sensei, Fynn has collaborated on tracks with Harper Finn, and Molly + The Chromatics and has jumped on multiple tours with the funk/rap group Lakes & The Magic Band.
For 23-year old producer Ethan, also known as 'Nice Enough', “the feel of the music” that Fynn fixates on goes to a whole new dimension thanks to his younger brother's melodic ear and production finesse. Ethan recently shared his beat-making talents with Harper Finn, working on the festy-loving electro bop Sun Down.
We’re looking forward to seeing what 2020 holds for No Comply. They’re certainly ones to watch.
