If you vibe on Anderson .Paak's sleek mix of funk, hip hop and soul like we do, then TheColorGrey will be the next rising star for you to get across. With an 2000s R&B croon like Usher, funky guitar and basslines like Anderson .Paak and a solid injection of rap attitude like Kendrick Lamar, the 23-year-old Belgian singer/producer/rapper is up for big things.
While his latest single Nothing At All is soulful as can be with a full live band, last year's record For What It's Worth showcases songs across the full gamut of genres, full of vulnerable honesty in songs like Couldn't Have Been More Wrong, sass in songs like Swerve, smooth Kaytranada-esque beats in The Thirst and rapid flow in Jamaica.
And in only two years, TheColorGrey has dropped two EPs, a full-length and six singles.
Calling Kendrick Lamar and D'Angelo idols, TheColorGrey doesn't just listen to hip hop in his spare time. He says in an interview, "I’ve been listening to Prince and Led Zeppelin a lot. Also, I try not to restrict myself by only listening to hip-hop. I’d rather keep an open mind to different genres in order to improve my own music. I take elements from every genre and blend it with my own sound."
He's big in his homeland of Belgium as well as in Luxembourg and Netherlands, but he's due to play Brighton, UK's The Great Escape in early May and it should only be a matter of time before the grey takes over the world.
