If you're looking for the next young superstar in rap, look no further than YBN Cordae. Part of the YBN collective alongside YBN Nahmir, YBN Almighty Jay and a slew of others who all met through gaming together, Cordae's started to turn heads for his thoughtful lyrical content, solid flow and innovative musicality.
Just last week, the 21-year-old dropped a new joint with Chance The Rapper called Bad Idea in the lead-up to his debut record, The Lost Boy. With features from rap veterans Meek Mill and Pusha T on it, it's like the old guard are welcoming Cordae's fresh voice into the fold. He's even been spotted in the studio with Dr Dre.
So how did he hook up with Chano?
"We met at Coachella, actually," Cordae tells Cool Accidents. "And we just linked, exchanged numbers and then I was in Chicago and we did some records together. Bad Idea was like the first, I really loved it, we did a couple records but I really rocked with that."
"A couple records" is the phrase piquing our interest here, and we hope his other song with Chance sees the light of day too. Calling Chance his "favorite cousin" on Instagram, Cordae says he calls up the Chicago native for advice all the time.
"For advice, for sure. Not so much ideas. But yeah for advice, 'cause he has a lot of knowledge, you know what I'm saying? He's done things that no one else has done as far as the [being musically] independent thing. Just everything."
He says he's "not nervous" about The Lost Boy's release though, and we can see why. Between being named on XXL Mag's 2019 Freshman Class this week and performing at the BET Awards today, Cordae's future is looking bright.
"I can't wait."
