Hiatus Kaiyote at (le) Poisson Rouge NYC
RnB was a big thing in the 90s. Then before it had a chance to breathe, it was 2010’s and Frank Ocean bought it back under the guise of a smooth kind of hip-hop.
Tame Impala / Flaming Lips @ Terminal 5, New York City
With a double headline of this calibre, who wouldn’t expect the security guards to be boogying too. Whilst New Yorkers dangled their feet from the second floor balcony of Terminal 5 in Hells Kitchen, security with big bellies were loving mixing up a rogue crowd-surfer chase down dance with a bit of a shuffle-bop.
Goosebumps On Goosebumps
My first Miguel experience was in a taxi cab in New York City a few years back. It was a moment that stuck with me partly because of the silky smooth vocals that were blasting out of the crappy speakers but probably more to do with the fact that the driver had the one song on repeat all the way from Harlem to the Lower East Side, the song in question was the slow jam to end all slow jamz, the ironically titled Quickie.
Twin Shadow @ SummerStage NYC
New York City’s summer has you sweating profusely for all of 2 minutes, before all of a sudden, it’s winter.
Again.
For like, 8 months.
So I decided to make the trek from my new digs in East Williamsburg all the way to Central Park, before the city’s SummerStage Festival draws to a close and all of a sudden watching a gig under the stars requires flying south with my tail between my (really cold) legs.
California Dreamin'
So I had a pretty amazing dream on Sunday July 28 2013 … it involved a 13 hour flight to LA, a fancy Hollywood hotel, amazing pre-drinks and a ride in a limo that dropped us at some random stadium those crazy Californian’s affectionately call the Rose Bowl in Pasadena … Oh it also included some dudes named Justin Timberlake & Jay Z … plus 60,000 excitable music fans.
This dream was the ‘Legends of The Summer Tour 2013’
HAIM @ The Hifi
In a flurry of shows that included stints at Splendour in the Grass and Fuji Rock in Japan, LA sisters HAIM managed to find the time in between flights to treat Melbournians to a show. Less a show and more of a complete and hypnotic aural seduction.
