I was about ten years old when I discovered that not every household played The Beatles and ABBA Gold on a regular basis. In fact, most families I knew didn’t.
We are not, as a rule, the biggest Beach Boys fans. People rave and rave (and listen to bootlegs, alternate mixes, and box sets of rare stuff) but Brian Wilson and Co. don’t always hit the spot.
Crazy and inspired yes, but essential, not so much.
When I was growing up, I thought it was normal for your dad to wear make-up, dress up as a woman, and mime along to some very, very cheesy songs with all the other dads every now & then.
