Hot Damn. How much good R&B music is doing the rounds at the moment?! Frank Ocean and Miguel were on many a taste-makers best of 2012 lists and it looks like we’re in store for more goodness this year with new records expected from old faithfuls D'Angelo (fingers crossed) and Bilal.
I guess whenever a scene or genre is flourishing the floodgates open and along comes a whole heap of new talent and thank God it does as that’s when new kids on the block like BJ The Chicago Kid come into play.
Hailing from Chicago (duh) BJ has been signed to the legendary Motown records which alone should be enough to let you know how legit the kid is but when you hear him in action you’ll see just how much sense that deal makes.
Have a listen to Good Luv'n below and you’ll hear him tipping his hat and paying homage to both Marvin Gaye and Curtis Mayfield as he incorporates lyrics from both to create his own slow jam and then there’s the newly released Honey which sees him again ‘borrow’ and twist lyrics from The Ohio Players and The Bee Gees.
Whether it’s penning tunes for the likes of Jill Scott, singing BVs for Usher, collaborating with Kendrick Lamar or working on his Motown debut (due late 2013) the future sure looks bright.
Get acquainted.
