A massive Friday night was had by all at Liberty Social Club this weekend, including yours truly as ‘The Ripe’ presented the first in a series of monthly parties that will go by the name ‘Bloom’. This month’s edition saw Silent Jay, Airwolf, Cosmo’s Midnight and Wave Racer take to the stage, laptops and decks in hand to lay down some fresh beats consistent of Melbourne’s ever growing scene. Hailing from London, electronic music is in my blood and on moving downunder I was hesitant (to say the least) on what might await. Whilst being worlds apart, Australia has gone and determined its own unique yet equal identity in the beats world as prominent Sydney trio, RÜFÜS have made clear with their recent chart topper.
Anyway, ‘Bloom I’ played host to a packed Liberty Social with beat lovers excited to indulge. Wave Racer a.k.a Thomas Purcell has been blowing up lately with his Nintendo 64 inspired tune ‘Rock U Tonite’ and was surely the main attraction for the masses. Combining rowdy bass with popular video game sounds seems to be prevailing strong lately.
I would personally vouch otherwise as Cosmo’s Midnight for me are in a league of their own. Subtlety, musicality, and that questionably awkward look which is actually cool as hell. Having released the ‘Surge EP’ earlier this year they have built up their own niche crowd and cater for them with delightfully constructed chilled house beats sat on by floating vocals. Often producer slash DJ’s find it hard transferring record sentiment on to the live stage but this fluffy pair from Sydney are so very seductive in a mystifyingly natural manner. I think it would be wise for you crew to keep two eyes peeled for Cosmo’s Midnight who are sure to be leading Melbourne movements, at the very least, for years to come.
So all in all ‘The Ripe’ have come up with the goods and I for one am looking forward to seeing what they have in store for next month’s ‘Bloom’ party. Book it in. If Friday’s anything to go by and word of mouth still exists it’ll be a big one!
