Billie Eilish is undoubtedly one of the biggest popstars on the planet, but that doesn't mean everyone is across how to properly pronounce her name - quite the opposite, in fact.

A survey by language-learning platform Babbel found that U.S newsreaders had a lot of trouble pronouncing Eilish. So much so, that it was one of the most mispronounced words of the year.

Other words on the list included cheugy, dogecoin and Omicron - all very topical choices. The list, which was compiled by the U.S Captioning Company, was created by surveying their members. They provide captions and subtitles for real-time events on TV and in courtrooms.

Speaking about the survey, Babbel Live teacher Esteban Touma said, “Newscasters in the U.S. have struggled with 2021′s new words and names while reporting on key sporting events, viral internet trends and emerging celebrities."

“As a language teacher, it’s always interesting to see that some of these terms are usually new colloquialisms, or are rooted or borrowed from another language. As a non-native speaker, I must confess it’s fun to see English speakers stumbling a bit for a change.”
