The R&B maestro BOY SODA recently teamed up with production wiz Taka Perry for the silky Lemonade, and it's a track that got us thinking: what if we gave them just 30 minutes to crank out a hit? Thankfully, the pair were on board with our idea, and they've taken part in the latest installment of our 30-Minute Song Challenge.
We recorded the pair doing their thing in the studio, and it's a sight to behold. In addition to cooking up the track, BOY SODA and Taka talked us through the making of Lemonade and gave us an insight into what happens when they're in the studio together. BOY SODA describes Taka's presence in the studio as a "kid in a spaceship", which is fitting when you see the gear that he's got at his disposal.
Lemonade is set to feature on Taka's debut EP, KAKOMIRAI, which is set to drop in the near future. Speaking about the track at the time of Lemonade's release, Taka reveals that it came together super quickly, explaining, "I’m a big believer that the best songs come together the quickest, with Lemonade, the whole song was mostly finished in about an hour, which was the same day BOY SODA and I actually met."
BOY SODA echoed his thoughts, adding, “Taka is such an electric mind and his process of creating is like this organised chaos of sound and colour, so being able to exist in the room with him and land on a song like Lemonade was so much fun to do. I think our worlds really collided in a perfect way, and for it to happen on the first time meeting each other is an amazing process to be a part of!”
You can check out the pair's 30-Minute Song Challenge below. It's a great insight into their process when they're in the studio together, and the pair hand out some valuable advice for any budding musicians that want to make the most of their time when they next step into the booth. Their process is a reminder that you should run with the ideas that come to you naturally. Don't second guess what you're creating!
