Fresh off winning the Michael Gudinski Breakthrough Artist Award at this year's ARIAs, Budjerah has released his soulful new single, Wash My Sorrows Away. Produced by frequent collaborator Matt Corby, it's a reminder of the intense emotions that are part of a teenage relationship.
Matt Corby's funk-flecked production gives Budjerah's voice the space to shine, and the result is a soaring vocal performance that captures exactly how he's feeling in the moment. Lyrics like "Am I lost out here/Or am I waking up to be your man" are both personal and relatable, and you'll feel each note hit like a wave (which makes the visuals for the lyric video especially fitting).
Speaking about the track, Budjerah says, “Wash My Sorrows Away is my teenage heartbreak song. Everyone has tough times and we all have our own ways of dealing with sadness, and this song tells what it's like for me when I'm in those situations.
"If I'm ever having a tough time I like to go home and get into the ocean, whether it's surfing or just diving under for a few seconds, it helps me get out of my own head. ‘You know I try to keep myself out of mind’. It's also about wanting to be with someone in particular, someone that takes up that space in your head ‘But I still keep you inside.’”
