Brooklyn artist Cautious Clay can really do it all. He's a singer, songwriter, producer and multi-instrumentalist, and he's recently released Agreeable, the first single from his 2021 debut album.
Cautious' lyrics are both humorous and sarcastic, but they're also beautiful. He's able to capture the little moments that make life so special, while also putting a smile on your face.
Cautious also recently featured on Australian singer Ruel's track say it again, and the pair have some serious chemistry. We spoke to Cautious about the collab with Ruel, his favourite Australian artists, and how to make the most of summer.
Cool Accidents: Can you tell us how the track with Ruel came about?
Cautious Clay: We first met in Brooklyn at a studio space a while back to work on some other ideas and became pretty cool after that. We would often run into each other at festivals and shows and what not but say it over actually came together in quarantine.
Ruel had hit me up to work on it and we went back and forth on the idea for a month or so. It definitely sounded kinda different when we first started but it evolved into something that we could both get behind.
What other Australian artists do you know and vibe off?
My top pics would have to be Flume, Hiatus Kaiyote, Kirin J Callinan and Pond. There's definitely an uninhibited type of reference point for what artists in Australia are doing right now and I feel like now or at some point all of these artists have made music that felt that way.
What's your number one tip for enjoying a gorgeous summertime day?
Being in nature, biking are definitely top things for me. I love having blankets out on the lawn with snacks: chips/salsa, cheese/apples, Lambrusco (wine) + frisbee.
What's the one song that has to be on every playlist you make?
Keep That Same Old Feeling by The Crusaders. I can't remember the first time I heard it but the song always puts me in a great mood.
