Charli XCX isn't your average kind of popstar but you already knew that. The party-driven Brit has flipped the pop script time and time again and it's left her with a fan group that are as wild, demanding and off-script as the girl they idolise. There's plenty to analyse when it comes to Charli's 'Angels' but what's most interesting is their obsession with and access to unreleased music.

Up until last year even, it seemed we knew Charli's pop trajectory. She went to number one in the US as a feature on Iggy Azalea's Fancy in 2014 and nabbed her own solo hit with Boom Clap. A second album Sucker followed which performed well but ultimately didn't place her with the Taylor Swifts of the world. Eyes turned to the third album which looked like it was set for release when After The Afterparty was released in 2016 but it's still not here and it may never arrive.

Ultimately, Charli's fans were never interested in her competing with pop's heavy weights. We're talking about the popstar who, before dropping a much-anticipated debut album, released the weird and wonderful Super Ultra mixtape featuring Brooke Candy who was, at that stage, not a common pop presence. The 'Angels' are internet savvy, hungry pop devotees that have made it possible for Charli to divert her path, one that led to the release of two brilliant mixtapes Number 1 Angel and Pop2. It feels like Charli has found her true pop identity as a Hannah Montana-esque artist who gets the best of both worlds - touring in big arenas with Swift and performing her most experimental cuts to hard core fans in clubs.

So where does unreleased music come into all of this? Well, over the past few months Charli has released two previously unreleased songs that fans have begged for. No Angel has been floating around on the internet since she and SOPHIE started playing it at parties two years ago and Girls Night Out similarly has been a fan favourite for the same amount of time before getting an official release. The 'Angels' are a relentless bunch and, despite the amount of new music they've been gifted over the past few years, have begged Charli to release these songs for years.

It's adoration but it's also a source of frustration for Charli. Her third album was initially marred by leaks something Charli admitted to be "pissed off" by in an interview last year with EWLeaks can often be the nail in the coffin for songs in the pop world but Charli fans still want official release - perhaps because they want greater exposure for her or because they're after HQ versions. Either way, head to Reddit or Twitter and you'll find her fans talking about her unreleased music just as much as they're talking about her released music. There are few popstars, if any, like Charli who have generated an excitement for songs that may never see the light of day.

Charli isn't responsible for leaks but she is, in part, responsible for creating this hunger for unreleased music. Her involvement with PC Music figures like A.G. Cook and SOPHIE has grouped her in with artists that are known for filling their sets with unreleased material. Charli's club sets have become more and more like this. She's been playing No Angel and Girls Night Out live, on and off, for some time now plus a host of others. As soon as she plays them, they go up on YouTube and the fans go on a witch hunt for them.

Go to Twitter right now and search 'Charli XCX Taxi' and you'll know exactly what we're talking about. Taxi was first played back in 2016 and has been a fan favourite ever since. She fuelled the desire for it earlier this year when she dropped it in her set for her Pop2 show in London. Everytime she drops new music she's asked, "where's Taxi?". It's surely a source of annoyance for her but she also playfully stokes the fire from time to time.

Bounce, T.K.O. and Good Girls are just a handful of other working titles that fans want ASAP or sooner as they expressed in a petition last year. Maybe she'll release them or maybe they'll remain an unreleased piece of romanticism but Girls Night Out and No Angel suggest that she's found a way to start giving them to fans though and she's promised plenty of new music this year. Fans should also be reminded though not to bite the hand that feeds. Be grateful for what she releases and while you're waiting just keep hitting play on those LQ live versions on YouTube. Charli knows what she's doing.
