The problem with the new generation of Reggae MCs is it’s hard to figure out what their latest product is. The likes of Movado, Vibz Kartel and Protoje record so much – and for so many labels – that it’s hard to figure out which project is which. That’s probably what has stopped us all showering praise on Pop’Caan’s awesome album Where We Come From which fuses new school urban pop and rasta vibrations in a perfectly infectious mix (try Waiting So Long for the flava).
And that’s why we nearly missed the brilliant Vybz Kartel single Clarks, a tune so good footwear sales soared in Jamaica.
So the nice thing about the recent Chronixx project Dread & Terrible is that it’s a proper album which highlights the singjay’s talent in several stylings, even including old school Skinhead Moonstop. The big hit Here Comes Trouble is on there too, full of references to Selaisse and righteous reggae, and complete with a beautiful dub. We have given Chronixx the big “conscious rasta” rave before when our pals at Major Lazer first introduced him to the west via mix-tape joy, but this is pretty sweet and well worth your time:
