Nigerian singer-songwriter and producer CKay has continued his domination of the world of Afrobeats with the release of his new single, You. Serving as the follow-up to June's Watawi, it's a slick slow-burning jam from one of the genre's leading names.
Having first burst onto the scene in 2017 with his single Container, Ckay has wasted no time in racing to the top of the Afrobeats charts. Releasing three EPs – including 2017's Who The Fuck Is CKay?, 2019's CKay The First, and 2021's Boyfriend – CKay saw his biggest success last year with the release of a remixed version of Love Nwantiti.
Featuring the likes of Joeboy and Kuami Eugene, the track was a massive hit, topping the charts in Switzerland, France, and Norway, and hitting number eight here in Australia. Since then, his profile has only continued to rise, with both the original and remixed versions of Love Nwantiti boasting close to a billion streams on Spotify alone.
Now, You is set to serve as another example of his exceptional artistry. Blending in elements of R&B and Amapiano, You arrives as a heartfelt rumination of love, commenting on the feeling of becoming so engaged and committed to the one you love that you lose all inhibitions. It's tender, yet passionate and powerful in a way that only CKay can pull off.
Working with producer Christer, the pair were able to craft a track that is as bold as it is vulnerable, combining both the Afrobeats and Amapiano genres in a way that is both unifying and celebratory.
As CKay himself says, a track like You is meant to bring people together, and given how his rising profile has seen more and more fans come together in celebration of his work, it seems like he'll have no trouble continuing to achieve this goal.
