To celebrate the release of the Spirit Of Akasha film and accompanying soundtrack which itself was put together to celebrate 40 years of Morning Of The Earth we’re going to be embarking on an epic east coast surfing adventure/ road trip next month in a VW kombi that is decked out to perfectly capture the essence of both films.
Here’s a little background info on the project - Spirit Of Akasha is produced by noted Australian film-maker Andrew Kidman (Litmus, Glass Love, Last Hope) and mentored by Albe Falzon (Morning of the Earth), It sets a new benchmark with a creative fusion blending the realms of surfing, music and film making.
World champion surfers such as Mick Fanning, Stephanie Gilmore, Tom Curren, Kelly Slater and Beau Young have joined the new guard of Heath Joske, Harrison Roach, Ellis Ericson and Ace Buchan and Jon Jon Florence, alongside ‘soul surfers’ Fergal Smith, Joel & Kye Fitzgerald among many more.
Filmed in locations throughout the world including Australia, Hawaii, Bali, Fiji, Tahiti, Mexico and Ireland, the film uses striking visuals and music reminiscent of the classic Koyaanisqatsi and Baraka, to portray the compelling beauty of surfing and its associated lifestyle.
The Spirit of Akasha soundtrack features mainly original songs composed and recorded by musicians with strong ties to the surfing community and includes a rare Brian Wilson recording. Other artists featured include Atoms for Peace, Andrew Van Wyngarden, Pond, Chris Robinson Brotherhood, Xavier Rudd, Angus Stone, Matt Corby, Dirty Three, Grouplove and many more.
We were lucky enough to get our mitts on a copy of the super deluxe version of the release recently and it really is something else.
Be sure to stay tuned to Cool Accidents and Spirit Of Akasha for all the info and to join in all the fun when we hit the road!
In the meantime check out the Sydney Festival trailer for the film below and if you’re in Sydney this weekend there are a limited number of tickets left to the Opera House event which will feature the premiere screening of the film as well as live performances by some of the artists on the soundtrack.
