E^ST isn't your regular 20-year-old. She's got three EPs under her belt, counts Zane Lowe as a fan and nailed her triple j Like A Version cover of Bittersweet Symphony when she was only 17.
Now she's putting her foot down and saying no to bad first dates and "building up an idea of someone in your mind", the basis of what her new song I Don't Lack Imagination is about.
It's a bombastic, confident new track and we're loving the bigger sound and move away from her piano-driven indie pop ballads.
We asked E^ST a little bit more about the song.
I Don’t Lack Imagination is about bad dates and building someone up in your mind, has a recent bad date inspired this song? What’s the worst date you’ve had?
Honestly this was inspired by a mountain of bad dates and misconnections haha. It's hard to pin it down to just one, they all kinda meld together and don't leave much of an impression other than, "Damn, I'm never hanging with this pinstripe again."
This song’s got a much more confident sound than Blowjob or Life Goes On. What artists or sounds were inspiring you while you were working on this song?
I was definitely listening to a lot of hip hop at the time. I was particularly frothing Amine, Brockhampton, and Knox Fortune (he's not quite hip hop but still very cool).
What was it like working with Oak Felder on this track, given he’s worked with some of the biggest pop artists of the moment like Demi Lovato and Alessia Cara?
It was really fun, Oak's a super cool guy. Making music with him was real joyous and fun, and in-between writing we ate heaps of fried green tomatoes and talked about sci fi. It was great.
