Things we already know about FKA Twigs:
a) She has a deft touch with music videos (and co-produces her own)
b) She’s pretty weird lookin’
c) She has a brilliant voice
d) She’s meticulous on the beat end and her production is out of sight
e) Her creative is consistent and her content is brilliant
So, knowing all these things through our first few exposures to the enigmatic FKA Twigs (see here & here) we now get to see all these things combined into one seriously confronting video that throws the middle figure up at the Pavlovian laziness of Miley Cyrus and her Channel V nudity cohort by showing that you need not go entirely sans clothes to convey sexuality. The manhandling of Twigs in her most recent video for Papi Pacify make Miley’s Wrecking Ball look PG-13 and when you think about it, it sort of is. Sure, Miley drops her kit but the new Twigs video has more violent sexuality to it than most people are ready to be confronted with at any time of the day. So many visceral moments across the five minutes.
What I haven’t yet mentioned is that the tune is a complete and utter jam. You spend the first section marveling at her vocal restraint displayed of a lightly splayed beat before that wholly sinister industrial crunch drops around 2 minutes. Also, don’t be mistaken, that chorus is a hook and this is a song. Abstract and meticulous production yes, but directionless song? No. This is a proper tune and she is a proper star. Her EP is about ready to drop and she’s about to blow up in t-minus not very long at all. Watch this space.
