Just this week spiritutronic duo Willow Beats announced that they would be joining the roster over at Pilerats. Now Pilerats if you’re not acquainted, are famous for being party animals to the extent that they’ve managed to turn it into a fairly successful business model, touring overseas artists here, filming music videos there and generally just be mildly debaucherous. The logical next step was a record label which kicked things off with the boy wonder Sable, kept a few singles in the air while they went to work with Willow Beats.
Just as news of the signing is out, so too is the first single from their next EP, a track called MEREWIF. Kalyani’s vocals are as always pristine though it feels like she’s commanding the song more than past tracks where she’s simply ridden then beat. This track feels all hers, a beat design to underpin her vocals rather than direct them. It’s a cohesive mix of natural and inorganic with the synth sections managing to avoid an industrial plunge and remain somehow twined in the foresty folds that visually brand the duo.
It’s an artfully constructed track and one that sticks out from the current crop of producer vocalists/duos in that it actually has something to hold on to. My kingdom for a topline.
The duo are touring through August and if it’s anything like last time, it’s not to be missed.
