Girl Power

Right now I’m not swooning over cute boys playing guitars and getting all sweaty on stage. Maybe it’s my state of mind, or maybe it has something to do with the Spice Girls reuniting for the opening of the London Olympic games. Instead, the back end of 2012 seems to be all about tunes made by babe'n chicks that give it their all. Here’s a little taste of some woman who have recently made me turn it up really loud.

    1. Haim - These three sisters hail from sun soaked LA and have been playing music in a cover band with their parents for years until in 2009 they stepped out on their own. 2012 has been a good year for Haim; recently supporting Mumford and Sons on their North American tour and even Ellie Goulding says she’s a huge fan. I’m gagging for a full length album to come but in the mean time check out the ever so dreamy break up song ‘Forever’

    2. Charli XCX - Her flavour is goth punk, mixed with sparkles, rainbows and spice girls. There’s no stopping Charli who recently visited Australia as part of the Parklife 2012 tour. She knows good beats when she hears them and when she’s up on that stage you notice it; booty shaking and jumping four feet into the air in buffalos - I personally can’t wait for her debut album which is set to drop early next year. One to watch in 2013 according to me. Check out the Dawn Shadforth directed video for 'You’re The One’

    3. Icona Pop - Can this Swedish electropop duo be any cooler? If you haven’t made 'I Love It (feat. Charli XCX) your summer anthem, please do yourself a favour make the introduction, because you won’t be sorry. Icona Pop are making their way to Australia later this year for Field Day and the sold out Falls Festival and I’ll be one crossing my fingers for a Sydney sideshow.

    4. Grimes - I haven’t been able to get enough of Grimes in 2012, and December 9th (the night she plays to a sold out OAF in Sydney) is very clearly marked in my diary. When a friend sent me 'Genesis’ earlier this year I knew it would be one of the best songs of the year. The day 'Visions’ was released, I spent my last $16 on the album and played it on repeat until my housemates sat me down and politely asked me to stop. A brilliant video, which was directed by Grimes herself includes a live python wrapped around Grimes’ neck, sword fighting in the desert, and strutting down the streets of L.A. with a cast of characters straight out of Mortal Kombat. Grimes, can i please have your PUSSY branded baseball cap?

    5. Kitten - Before you YouTube Kitten, put any preconceptions aside. This band isn’t a cute and cuddly little creature who will lick your face; Kitten is 100% talent.. Lead singer Chloe Chaidez is only 17years of age and when playing a set absolutely tears up the stage. I recently experienced Kitten work their magic at LA’s Bootleg in Silver Lake as part of their September residency. I was immediately impressed with how Chaidaez gives herself whole heatedly to the crowd, like a sacrifice. G# is my favourite track from their 'Cut It Out’ EP and the incredible end-of-the-world // Tank Girl inspired video is one definitely worth watching.
