Rapper Megan Thee Stallion's Hot Girl Summer is rubbing off on HAIM too. The sister-trio have finally dropped their first song since 2017's Something To Tell You and it's called Summer Girl, a relaxed, jazzy ode to cheering a loved one up when they're down.
The song's definitely different to what we've heard from the ladies before. They've left '90s-influenced rock and pop aside for jazzy drums and a literal saxophonist that follows them around LA as they strip off layers and layers of jackets and sweaters into something more comfortable for LA.
Singer Danielle Haim explains she wrote the Lou Reed-inspired song for her partner (and HAIM producer) Ariel Rechtshaid, when he was diagnosed with cancer a few years ago.
She writes on Instagram, "this song started out as a garage band demo in my phone with just a bass line, drums, some gibberish and a doot doot doot little melody. I wrote it around the time my partner was diagnosed with cancer a couple years ago while we were making STTY. (he’s in the clear now!) we were touring on and off at this time and every time we were on the phone with each other or when I would come home in between shows, I wanted to be this light that shined on him when he was feeling very dark."
