Into and Out Of The Blue

  • Into and Out Of The Blue
    POSTED

So after a whole year residing in this place you guys are lucky enough to call home, it’s time to take the boot. Bounce. Offski. Farewell.

I came to these parts expecting to knock doors, get paid commission, pick mangoes, live off plain pasta, consume copious amounts of red goon and wash on St Kilda beach. Instead I ended up scoring a sweet as job with the people at Warner Music Australia and Cool Accidents meaning that, despite still doing all those things, I got to get all wrapped up in the fascinating Oz music culture.

From realising that the record classifications are far less than in the UK to learning that nobody has a Scooby Doo as to what Jungle music is to recognizing that it’s just the same how everyone hates something the minute it becomes popular.

I’ve seen endless amounts of shows from each and every genre imaginable in three different states, noticed that a surprisingly large number of people working in the industry actually don’t seem to give a fuck about the music (nobody at Cool Accidents of course!) and come to the conclusion that Brisbane probably has the most exciting scene at present.

On that, here’s a few of my favourite artists and tracks I’ve come across in the past year.

    The Trouble With Templeton

These lushes were one of the first gigs I went to in Melbourne and four shows and a thousand listens later they are still one of the raddest bands I’ve come across. Not many albums have had such an effect on me in the past five years. So if you haven’t already, check it the fuck out! (BRISBANE!)

    Panama

This EP is one of those five-listen-a-day-jobbies in which you just don’t get tired of it. I found myself getting slightly tired of the beats scene out here but this gorgeous jam snapped me right out of that one.

    Thelma Plum

I have to say it took a while for me to warm to her but now I am like totally loved up. Like beyond belief. Please keep writing such amazing tunes Thelma dearest. (BRISBANE!)

    Bad Pony

Here’s one that you may not know much of but they’ve most certainly stuck with me since I first laid ears on them. Mean, mean live band and a real infectious EP to match. You’re welcome.

    Holy Holy

Yet another band that just totally had me from the first time I heard them. Intensified tenfold by a stunning live show to match. Keep an eye or two out cos they are most definitely going places. (BRISBANE!)

    Movement

This is easily one of the sickest tunes I’ve heard all year. Straight up rinse material in our house from the Sydney duo.

    Oscar Key Sung

And at last but by no means least this banger from the king of cool. Stay locked for what is sure to be one of the releases of the year next month when the Holograms EP drop diddly drops.

This bunch is only scratching the surface and I’ve most likely forgotten an absolute gem in my crocked state but for now, over and out.*
