R&B and soul vibes have had a resurgence in recent years with the popularity of Frank Ocean, Anderson .Paak, Kehlani and SZA and we've just discovered a new R&B singer from our very own backyard that we think is pushing the genre forward.
19-year-old Filipino-Australian Lara Andallo has dropped her debut single Confidential today and while it may not seem like it on first listen, it's a total earworm you'll find swirling around your brain for hours.
With her crisp, controlled vocals, she brings to mind the tunes of Mya, Cassie or Amerie from the early 2000s and mates, we're so into it. And like Cassie, she's a multi-hyphenate - Lara is a trained dancer, actor and multi-instrumentalist.
The song's got an empowering message too - to hold your cards to your chest, not give a fuck about what others think of you and keep it real.
"Confidential started as a sad song about being an outsider," Lara says. "When I wrote it, I wasn’t dancing very much, I’d lost some friendships, and I was processing that.
"But over time, it changed from being a sad song to an empowering one. Now it’s about feeling different but not giving a fuck.”
Let's not keep Lara confidential for much longer.
