Mahalia has just dropped her first single of 2021, Jealous, and she knew she had to make it an occasion. That's why she called in Rico Nasty to jump on the track. Mahalia brings the sweet, soulful vocals, while Rico comes through with the bars.
If you're a fan of classic R&B, then you'll enjoy Jealous, because it feels like a blast from the past. Produced by Cadenza, it was written during a period that Mahalia says involved a lot of hurt.
Speaking to i-D, Mahalia says, “I never knew how much unsupportive friends could break my heart — much more than any romantic relationship anyway,” she says. “I used to spend a lot of time blaming myself when others had something bad to say about me, thinking about all the things I could’ve done to hurt them, to make them say those things.”
“Using that word to describe others' behaviour always felt a little narcissistic to me, but then I realised that we all experience that at some point; we all want what we don’t have, and that can cause hate to spill out of us, whether aimed at someone in the public eye, on Instagram or someone much closer to us.”
The video for the track was made by London director Melody Maker, and takes a lot of influence from the 1998 Hype Williams film Belly. If you grew up watching MTV and the videos they'd air, then you'll feel like Jealous is a blast from the past.
