The luscious tones of “I’m Aquarius” won’t come as a surprise to anybody aware of Metronomy’s musical compass, but it is a step away from the warm, sun-drenched timbre of their last record, 2011’s The English Riviera. On “I’m Aquarius”, Joe Mount hands his listeners a passport beyond tropical tranquility to a stratosphere of astrological tidings and inauspicious love. Joe reflects over a king-sized duvet of slow mounting pale synths and barely danceable percussion. Forlorn confessions about not sharing a star sign sit atop a framework of programmed R&B drums and lo-fi synths. This is a tale of new-age romance engulfed by gloom.
