It's rare to catch pop auteur Sia doing interviews at all, let alone one this candid, but over the weekend Rolling Stone dropped a huge feature with the Adelaide singer/songwriter and she had lots of interesting bits to share.
One of them - the time Donald Trump (before he was president) asked to take a photo with Sia, and she told him no.
She was performing on SNL that night in 2015, one of three unprecedented times that year, when Donald Trump caught up to her backstage, calling her name. He was hosting that particular episode.
Sia explains that Trump said, "We’ve got to get a photo!” with Ivanka Trump hovering not too far away with a camera. After a moment's quick thinking, Sia considered her fanbase and told him somewhat bluntly, "Actually, do you mind if we don’t? I have a lot of queer and Mexican fans, and I don’t want them to think that I support your views.”
Apparently Trump wasn't phased at all, replying, "Oh, no problem. Then don’t.”
Sia says of the interaction: “It was as if he viewed me as protecting my brand. He respected that. I was like, ‘Thank you so much,’and then I went into my dressing room and had crazy diarrhea.”
Bless Sia for always telling it like it is.
