For a couple of years we have all been trying to make up our minds about Sky Ferreira.
It was confusing as she went this way and that but worth it because of singles like this Dev Hines produced “Everything Is Embarrassing”
And because she kicked back a bit at the system and said stuff like this about her label:
“They said: ‘Don’t talk about religion, don’t talk about sex, don’t talk about drugs … basically, just look pretty and smile.’”
It probably didn’t make her easy to sell, but it did make her intriguing. And she has a dark, moody, even “blue” edge to her only increased by her drug bust and her explicit statement that accompanied the orange suited mugshots.
“They handed me this orange suit and some Crocs and I’m like: 'Nooooo! Not Crocs! This must be my real punishment!’“
Then we knew she got it and was one of us and not just a “pop star” creation.
This may well be the year of the huge female album – with rumoured records coming Sia Furler, Florence, Adele, Kylie, and Emily Sande – but surely we cannot be alone in hoping that “Night Time, My Time” turns out to be as intriguing as the build up when it finally drops?
