Sampling songs from the past has always been a way for hip-hop producers to build their beats, but it's also something that happens in other genres of music, including pop and electronic music.
While it's sometimes difficult to know when a song includes a sample, Twitter user MankySwan has put together a musical history lesson, showing some of the biggest songs in history that have been built based off sampling other artists.
The thread breaks down each sample, and shows how it originally sounded - as well as explaining how it's been edited to create the sounds that we know today.
For example, Daft Punk's hit One More Time includes a sample from 1979 track More Spell On You by Eddie Johns - and they transformed the sample into a beat that is unmistakable.

One of the most prominent parts of the instrumental of Paper Planes by M.I.A started out as an '80s punk song from The Clash called Straight To Hell.

Britney Spears' Toxic has an iconic beat, which started out as 1980 track Tere Mere Beech Men by Lata Mangeshkar and S.P. Balasubramaniam.
