Perth MC Sowdy is getting ready to release his new single On My Mama Imma Problem, and it's a self-produced, bouncy track that'll make hip-hop fans sit up and take notice. It's another taste of Sowdy's upcoming album, Paint The City Purple, which is set to be released towards the end of 2022. The track is a display of his many talents, and it's one to bump when you're driving through your hometown. Let the song's production shake your windows.
Sowdy explores the story of his upbringing on On My Mama Imma Problem, labelling himself as a "problem child". However, Sowdy's gone on to great things since his youth, developing his craft while bringing other Perth creatives along for the ride. Sowdy shows off his versatile flow on this new one, while his varied vocal inflections keep things fresh until the very end.
He's been especially busy over the last couple of years, releasing the 15-track anthology Shine! in 2020 and collaborative album Picture Show alongside producer Macks Martin in 2021. He's also the founder of the independent label Shine! Records, home to Dimslim, Macks Martin and K Tha Sovereign, so there's always a lot going on in Sowdy's world. We're excited to premiere On My Mama Imma Problem now!
Speaking about the track, Sowdy says, “This track, along with Street Hop really serve as counterparts within the context of my upcoming album. Despite the braggadocious energy throughout the song, I weave in details of my own personal struggles with mental health and getting into trouble in my youth and explaining how that had myself labelled as a ‘problem child.’
"That then leads into the clarity and how I believe myself to be a ‘problem’ to the structure of the music industry, as I am a 100% independent artist, have launched my own label and have no thoughts of stopping. I have a clear vision of how I want to carry myself as an artist and entrepreneur. The track is my manifesto; that I’m focused, hungry and here to stay whether you like it or not.” He's a massive part of Perth's booming hip-hop scene, and if you're a fan of the rap that's coming out of Australia, then keep an eye on what's going on out West.
