I start my day off at MOKHA sipping on a Machiatto with Tracey and Steven. Steven works for the promoter and stays with the Cold War Kids when in New York. Tracey is tour managing Mumford And Sons and has had a on-again-off-again thing with one of the members of Empire of The Sun. I never remember which one. I read the morning paper and smoke a rolled cigarette, I don’t like polluting my body with tailoreds.
Tracy checks her iPhone, scowls and says ‘Darls, I gotta go in.. I have Mumford meeting with Channel V in an hour. Later baaabes!’
Our cheeks touch twice, she puts on the Ray Bans she stole from B.R.M.C. years ago and she is off. I go back to my paper while Steven takes an Instagram picture of breakfast. Haloumi, Mushrooms and Spinach with free range eggs. Fourteen likes.
2pm and I’m at The Beach Hotel in Byron. I’m hanging out with Damian who works for one of the labels, has 4 bands here and is a close friend of Harry Connick Jr. We talk about whether the after-party is worth going to this year. THE NATIONAL are flying back to Sydney tomorrow morning and TV ON THE RADIO will be leaving early as well. I think back to Coachella’s after party this year and remember hanging out Jared Leto and hooking up with one of the cast members from the TV Show Girls. I won’t tell you which one, but I ended up spending a week with her in New York.
We decide this after party will not be worth going to. We both hold on to the tickets.
4pm and I’m FINALLY at the Festival… Bar. I have my AAA lanyard looped through my belt holder which is good because I sure as shit don’t want to drink with the plebs. I’m with Brianne who works for one of the streaming companies and is also carrying. We go to the toilets. ‘It’s so great to not have to line up like the rest of the plebs, those toilets are disgusting!’ Brianne says, pouring the contents onto the top of the toilet. ‘Yeah it’s great but this set-up is definitely not as good as the set-up at Coachella’ I say. Brianne nods her head.
We leave the stalls and see Tracey from across the bar with the boys from JAGWAR MA, who performed earlier in the day. She waves at us and we go over to meet her. ‘I was just saying how great the guys were earlier?’ Tracey says. Brianne and I agree enthusiastically. ‘The crowd were so into it!’ I say. Tracey and Brianne agree. We talk about New York for a bit.
After several trips to the stalls, Me, Brianne and Geoff, who just finished interviewing Drapht for Channel V, go and watch the National from side of the stage. Brianne is dancing and Geoff is sipping on a beer. We all agree their new tracks sound great live but they were so much better at SXSW. Geoff has heard an unreleased demo and says that the new stuff is “fucking amazing”.
We leave before they finish and make our way to the taxi stand. Geoff has heard of great beach house party where UNKNOWN MORTAL ORCHESTRA are playing. We all agree it is not to be missed.
We talk about New York in the taxi.
