The Flaming Lips' lead singer Wayne Coyne hasn't been shy about the fact that the band thinks inflatable bubbles could help save live music.
Speaking to Brooklyn Vegan, Wayne discussed the project, saying, “You fill them up and people can be in them for quite a while. I don’t think people quite realize that. Since we have some here, we’ve played with them and messed with them for quite a while.
"I mean, even back in 2006, I would get in one of the space bubbles at the end of our big Halloween parade here, and I would walk down the street for almost an hour in one. Yeah. You know what I mean? It holds a lot of air. I mean, you can be in there for quite a while.”
For most bands, that's where the idea would have ended. However, The Flaming Lips have just made their bubble idea a reality. They tested their bubble concert idea at a gig in Oklahoma City, where both the band and audience were inside giant bubbles for the whole gig.
They believe that it's a way for musicians to continue performing throughout the coronavirus pandemic, and it looks like they might just be right. Each bubble held up to three people, with the venue apparently holding 100 bubbles.
Not exactly the crowd The Flaming Lips are used to, but it's still a way for people to get to see their favourite bands, in a way that will likely never be repeated post-pandemic.

Check out some footage from the show below via Wayne's Instagram. To be honest, we'd love to be in a bubble in a crowd at the moment. How fun would moshing be if you know you wouldn't hurt yourself by running into someone else?
