It was officially the first day of winter… in terms of the temperature, not literally… and fellow Aussies, Triple J Unearthed artists The Griswolds were playing at Brooklyn Bowl. So feeling like some Aussie warmth, I piled on my 14th item of clothing (it’s true, I counted) and trudged my way through the icy wind to one of my favourite music venues in New York.
It turns out, the beautiful energy exuding from the Griswolds’ sunny indie pop was just what New Yorkers needed to melt some of the wintery ice taking over the city, strip off some excess layers and surge on to the dancefloor. My pre-winter blues were also dissolving…well at least until I stepped outside again.
The small gang of Aussie groupies were almost as entertaining as the band, having the time of their life dancing in the front row, but even more so when the boys pulled them up on stage to have a dance to their final tune, the one that found them fame on Triple J, Mississippi.
The greatest thing about Brooklyn Bowl is that you can casually go bowling, nibble on some well renowned Mac N Cheese and Fried Chicken (reportedly, the best in NYC), whilst watching some pretty epic bands. So many awesome things, all in one spot.
The Griswolds have been touring from the west to the east coast of the US, and are now on lock down in freezing NYC writing for their new album, to be recorded early next year. According to the band, they plan to evolve their style globally in their debut LP whilst maintaining their roots; big choruses their fans can sing along to. Stay tuned in early 2014.
And ladies, they’re “all on Tinder”. FYI.*
