I was supposed to clean the house yesterday, so instead I spent a lot of time brushing up on my knowledge of 90s’ Grrl Riot band Bikini Kill and pouring through Kathleen Hanna* and Tobi Vail’s blogs – I have no regrets, they make for super reading. So when my boyfriend came home with tickets to The Pierces’ gig at OAF, I was primed for some girl musicianship. Don’t get me wrong, there are next to no comparisons to be made between Bikini Kill’s 90s Grrl Riot punk and The Pierces’ soulful folk, but the important commonalities are there: X-chromosomes and stellar music. The Pierces are a dynamic sister-act hailing from NYC, who have been taking off in the past few years and are now in Australia opening for Coldplay. Their salient vocals, upbeat folk-pop tunes, glam looks and choreographed moves made for a performance reminiscent of 80s girl band The Bangles – which filled a hole in my heart I hadn’t even realised was there. More of this please!

*Fun Fact: Hanna was the girl who scrawled ‘Kurt smells like teen spirit’ on Cobain’s bedroom wall one night when they were drunk and not yet famous.
