The role of art (and art schools) in Rock music is well documented. So many great bands formed and conceived themselves at art school that the list is too long to mention.
Now as we anxiously await the be arrival in Australia of the best of the “new school of art” (or indiellectual as its been dubbed in the ever labelling UK press) in the form of Django Django here’s a new twist to video making.
Here is the Raphael masterpiece “The School of Athens” from 1510 as it is in the Vatican.
The picture is a musing on Greek Philosophy with Aristotle at its core. That’s him in the middle in the blue talking to Plato in the red. But the painting works at a number of levels and if it interests you go Wikipedia and read about it.
It is recast in Gangsta style in the video for what is my favourite new “rock” record of now – Tessellate by Alt-J.
I love this song. I love what they tried to do with the clip. Its unashamedly clever and we can use this in a world of Usher. I wouldn’t call it “rock” but it sort of is, in a new style.
So enjoy it.
Ps. Its from the album “An Awesome Wave” which you probably want to get on before it becomes the new Coldplay and its not cool to drop anymore.
