Louisville rapper 2KBABY is wise beyond his years, and you can tell that from his music. He and his little brother didn't have anyone to depend on growing up, so they had to fight for survival, and you can hear that pain in 2K's voice, even today.
He's just dropped his collab with EDM superstar Marshmello, Like This, and it's proof of his star power. To help you get up to speed on all things 2KBABY, we've taken a look at his past, his present, and where he's heading next.
Who is he?
2KBABY started making music at 15, and quickly found himself the talk of the town in Louisville, where he's from. It's the same area as where Jack Harlow is from, and speaking to DJBooth, he says that Louisville has always had a mixture of sounds coming out of it.
2K says, "Louisville never really had its own sound — it’s a mixture. There’s people who listen to Chicago, Detroit, listen to everything. It’s very diverse. Everybody doing their own thing. That’s why my sound’s so unique. I wouldn’t say Louisville is oversaturated with a specific sound, because we get influences from all the other big cities."
He's making music for his family, and to support those that need him. Speaking to DJBooth, 2K says, "Everything I do is for my family. This lifestyle I’m living now — which I was only seeing on my phone a few years ago — is cool, but I ain’t gon’ lie, it do be a lot of pressure."
What does he sound like?
Speaking to Complex, 2K says he's all about rappers that are "really rapping", and he singles out Lil Wayne, Michael Jackson, G Herbo, Lil Durk and Chief Keef as his influences. He says, "My style was a real MC — just really rapping, because I used to listen to G Herbo and all of that. Then I moved to Atlanta a year ago, and that's when I started tapping into melodies and trying to sing more."
Nowadays, he's balancing singing and rapping, and he's making music that anyone can relate to. "It's genuine and it's authentic. You can feel that shit. I be trying to make my music so that anybody from any walk of life can feel that shit."
After moving from Louisville to Atlanta, 2K says that he's all in on music. He says, " I can really focus on music, a hundred percent. Since I came here, I ain't done none of the bullshit I was on back home. I ain't pulled none of that down here. I came here, and I've been focused since I got here. Just strictly music. I've been focused. I just know if I don't execute, I've got to go back home. Do I want to go home? No. I've got to execute."
