Australian singer, songwriter and producer Drella has just released his debut single, Until The Morning, and if you're a fan of funk-infused pop, then you'll want to check this out. Drella's vocal delivery weaves between a cutting falsetto and a lower, raspy register, and it's a track that seems ready-made to soundtrack the witching hour.
To celebrate the release of Until The Morning, we've put together a guide to Drella, both as a person and a musician. You can check out Until The Morning below, and read on to learn all about Drella!
Who is Drella?
As a child, Drella spent time in his parents' native Macedonia singing with bands that played in restaurants, and it's fair to say that music has always been a part of his life. He's influenced by artists like Prince, Terence Trent D'Arby and INXS' Michael Hutchence, while more recently being inspired by Tame Impala, The 1975, Jai Paul and more. Comparisons to Prince are more than fair - it's not hard to see that Drella has a similar energy to that of the legendary performer.
The pandemic saw Drella return to Melbourne, the scene for his childhood, and a challenge was laid down by his brother. He was tasked with writing a song every day, which allowed him to further develop his sound. Long before he adopted the moniker Drella, he's written songs for other artists, as well as worked with Sweden's The Wolf Cousins (who have written tracks for The Weeknd, Ariana Grande and Dua Lipa amongst others), so Drella was more than up for the challenge. Until The Morning is the first taste of those writing sessions, with more to come in the future!
What does his music sound like?
If you ask Drella, his music is full of contradictions. His artist name comes from an art book about Andy Warhol, where Drella discovered that The Velvet Underground's Lou Reed called Andy Warhol "Drella" - a portmanteau of Dracula and Cinderella.
Speaking about his artist name, Drella reveals, “I loved that so much - I just love the idea that two opposite things make so much sense together. “I’ve always felt a little bit that way as well and I feel like that describes my music too - there are a lot of different elements that you wouldn’t think work together, but they do”. Not all artists have the range to transition from a falsetto down to a rasp and back again, but he's able to pull it off with ease.
This duality can be heard on Until The Morning. Drella's vocals are always on the move, never stagnating throughout the track. The song's groovy production elevates Drella's vocals, and by the end of the song, you'll be convinced that the comparison to Dracula and Cinderella is apt. It's at-times a sultry, late-night track, but the joy soon shines through.
Speaking about the track, Drella explains, "I started writing Until The Morning in my room, and then I got with my two music partners Dylan Bauld and Sam Watters to finish it. I love the way the minimal alt/funk production challenges my vocals creating a push and pull effect in the song.
"Once the song was complete, I bought Grey Ghost in to direct the video with me and he really killed it. The video makes the song feel complete. It was the first video we collaborated on and I can’t wait to see what we do next."
What's next for Drella?
Drella's preparing to release his debut EP later this year, and it's promising to be a look into his soul, taking off the veil of him as an artist, and revealing more about him as a person. If you enjoyed Until The Morning, then you'll want to check this out - we're tipping that Drella is going to have a big year.
