Akon has announced that he's launching his own cyrptocurrency in July.
The currency will be aptly called Akoin and he already has grand plans for it as he announced during Cannes Lions 2018.
As the Akoin website states, Akon plans to build a "100% crypto-based city" on 2,000 acres of land which was gifted to Akon by the President of Senegal.
It may sound completely ridiculous but Akon has a pretty eloquent response as to why he's launching Akoin.
“I think that blockchain and crypto could be the savior for Africa in many ways," he said.
"It brings the power back to the people and brings the security back into the currency system and also allows the people to utilize it in ways where they can advance themselves and not allow government to do those things that are keeping them down."
You'll be glad to know not even Akon really knows about the technical side of it all. He's leaving that to the "geeks".
