Brisbane-based hip-hop artist Baby Prince has leaned into the latest stage of his already-impressive career, dropping his newest EP, SpriteSchool Vol.2. The follow-up to 2019's Vol.1 (and July's Mason Dane collab, Fall Thru), the EP is already an acclaimed piece of work from the young artist, who continues to astound at every turn.
With just seven tracks, SpriteSchool Vol.2 might be a quick listen, but not a single second is wasted. Tracks like BETTY CROCKER and COPACOBANA show off a familiar side to Baby Prince, while the likes of NO ENGLO and MONA help to show him breaking new ground.
While his first EP might have been showcasing him as something of a gifted newcomer, this new release sees him shining and establishing himself as a dominant force in the world of local hip-hop.
"I’ve been working on this project for the longest, I’ve probably had 4 or 5 different versions of it at different stages since I released Volume 1," he explains. "The whole project is really a compilation of my life and how it speeds up and slows down at different intervals, that’s why it’s called SpriteSchool.
"It’s that muddy trap sound that I basically grew up on from idolising artists like 2 Chainz to Future, and I’ve been able to mould it, put my own swag on it, modernise it," he adds. "I feel like Volume 1 you could hear where I was trying to take it. Volume 2 I was able to really lock in with my brother Liam Thomas so this time around that muddy trap sound really come thru.”
However, one of the standout moments comes by way of his recent single SHAKE. His second collaboration with BLESSED after DOWN UNDER, the track comes accompanied by a slick visual, featuring the talents of Moonboy Studios.
The clip, which Baby Prince describes as "an anime-influenced fantasy narrative", sees him living out his anime dreams, assuming the role of a student of the great sensei, portrayed by BLESSED. As he fights for his love, he harnesses the magnetic fields of the earth and conjures electricity from the sky in an action-packed bid to rescue her.
