As a small crowd of devoted and almost cult like followers of one of world music’s most interesting and alternative hip hop duos begins to assemble you can practically taste the excitement on the air. When vocalist MC Ride (Stefan Burnett) takes to the stage to set up his back drop that consists of two iMacs vertically standing on a table, you notice that he looks considerably smaller and more timid than in many of the photos of DG live shows. This all goes down the drain as the first drop hums through the chest cavity of every person privileged to see this spectacle and after the duo rip off their shirts they seem to grow a solid two feet.
The body of Ride is covered in tattoos and he screams what seem to be incoherent sounds to anyone who isn’t a fan of the band, but everyone here knows the words better than they know themselves and they scream them back with such enthusiasm you can hardly hear the band themselves. The white skinhead wearing a singular shoe on the drums is Zach Hill, he continued to impress me throughout the whole set due to the fact that he did not stop for the entire forty-five minute set in the forty-six plus degree heat. In fact throughout the whole set there was not a single second of silence, no break between songs.
This live duo are one of if not THE most impressive performances that I experienced at Big Day Out and strongly advise anyone headed to the remaining BDO shows to get yourself to see these guys.
