When Eminem released his 1999 album The Slim Shady LP, it was a great insight into the split between his alter-egos Slim Shady and Eminem, and the man behind them, Marshall Mathers.
The Slim Shady LP won the 2000 Grammy for Best Rap Album, and turns out that of the biggest songs from the album, My Name Is, has a secret message. Recently, that discovery has gone viral thanks to a TikTok from @fiveforty540.
When you play the track on an original 1999 vinyl pressing of The Slim Shady LP, there's a case of "backmasking" going on. Essentially, when you rotate a record in reverse, the sound is reversed - and if you're an artist, you can insert a secret message into the track, if that's your thing.
@fiveforty540 describes this case of backmasking as “a real true introduction into the layers of Marshall Mathers as Eminem as Slim Shady” because Eminem can be heard saying "it's Eminem" when the track is played in reverse.
