We've noted how closely hip hop and emo/punk seems to be intertwined these days. Vince Staples has been working on a punk project with blink-182's Travis Barker, Juice WRLD, Benny Blanco and Brendon Urie teamed up for a track called Roses and rappers like Lil Uzi Vert and Post Malone are noted punk lovers.
Now ILoveMakonnen and Fall Out Boy have gotten together for a posthumous track featuring Lil Peep, who called Fall Out Boy and notably their bassist Pete Wentz "one of his musical heroes".
The song is called I've Been Waiting, with Makonnen telling Rolling Stone he brought the demo to Peep back in 2017. “That’s how I do songs: Come into the studio, make the main elements of the beat, one-take an idea, hook-verse-hook-verse and maybe bridge. I played [Lil Peep] the idea, and he really liked it and gravitated towards this one the most out of all the other ones.”
After Peep passed, Pete Wentz reached out to Makonnen offering condolences. "I was telling him me and Peep were both big fans, and Peep told me Fall Out Boy is one of his musical heroes, and how his style was between iLoveMakonnen and Fall Out Boy, so it would be an honor if they could do one of the records we have for the album. They were very keen on being a part of it.”
