We were already impressed by the Gold Coast-based indie rocker's performance at BIGSOUND this year, and now San Mei's come out and stunned us with her new video for her single, Heaven, which we're stoked to premiere today on Cool Accidents.
Set in a Chinese restaurant in a subtle nod to her Chinese-Malaysian father, we basically watch a Romeo + Juliet-inspired love story take place in a super unique way. We're loving the way their emotions are really captured in this video - from the coy looks, the dreamy dance scene towards the end and the table-cloth spinning euphoria, it's a modern take on the classic love story that fits San Mei's woozy sound perfectly.
Of the video, San Mei says, "Filming the video was so much fun and working with Jennifer Embelton and her team is always a dream. We shot it in this amazing, crazy-looking suburban Chinese restaurant that had really bold colours and features, and it was the perfect setting for our video.
"I originally had referenced Baz Luhrmann's Romeo + Juliet for the video, and Jen took that and created some subtle odes to the movie (Oliver, our love interest's 'Leo' style, replicating the dreamy feeling of 'that' fish tank scene when Oliver and I encounter each other for the first time) while still executing her own vision for the video. I think we ended up with something special that has really brought some magic to the song."
You'll find Heaven on San Mei's upcoming Heaven EP, due out on November 2nd. She's also hitting the road from October 13th, playing a couple of headline shows in Sydney and Melbourne and then heading out in supporting of Holy Holy (the band's Oscar Dawson also produced the new EP).
