Australia's hip hop/R&B scene is ripe at the moment, with the likes of Kymie, Buddy Ryan, Phil Fresh and more impressing us with their bars and beats recently.
Now we have another Sydney newcomer to introduce to you - 19-year-old A.GIRL (full name Hinenui-Terangi Tairua), a R&B/hip hop-fusing singer who's bringing her experiences growing up in the suburbs of Western Sydney to life with her unbelievably good debut single, 2142.
Taking inspiration from the likes of SZA and Jorja Smith's smooth vocals and pairing that with suave beats, 2142 samples actual audio of a young woman A.GIRL knows being arrested by police in Sydney's 2142 postcode.
"The song is about the area I was exposed to and the things I saw first-hand. As much as it represents 2142, it’s an anthem for all people from all areas that have been through the same,” she explains.
A.GIRL calls Sydney home but also has roots with her Maori family back in New Zealand, which undeniably influences her sound and aesthetic too.
If this is her debut, we're super keen to see what A.GIRL comes up with in future. Keep an eye on her!
